Health and Wellbeing at Work

Health and Wellbeing is becoming more of a strategic priority in many organisations.

‘Proactive management of employees’ physical and mental health can produce a range of important business benefits including reduction of sickness absence; lost time due to accidents and associated costs; greater staff engagement and productivity; reduced staff turnover recruitment and costs’ (BitC)

Organisations of all sizes and within all industries can benefit from improving the health and wellbeing of their workforce. Retaining experienced and skilled employees not only makes sense in terms of cost saving and productivity, but also has a direct effect on the quality of frontline services.

This section outlines some of the things you can do to ensure that your health and wellbeing approach is embedded and integrated throughout your organisation. The true benefits will not be realised if health and wellbeing is seen as an ‘add on’; standalone initiatives are unlikely to be effective in supporting staff, increasing productivity or decreasing sickness absence. A strong health and wellbeing culture will be threaded through day to day working, including management practices, recruitment and review meetings.

Health and Wellbeing initiatives do not need to be expensive, but the return on investment has the potential to ensure your business remains a success. The Wellbeing tool is a good starting point to identify cost savings which can be made by improving sickness absence and increasing productivity.
