NHS 2012 x 2012 Challenge

The NHS 2012 x 2012 (UK) Challenge has been launched! Its aim is to get 300,000 NHS staff (2,012 per Primary Care Trust area) involved in physical activity by the 2012 Olympic Games in London.

The Challenge in the East of England

The regional ambassador Sara Dunling is currently meeting with representatives from each of the County Sports Partnerships to find out about activities already happening in each of the counties. There is already a lot going on around the region which can easily be promoted to NHS staff to encourage them to 'up' their physical activity levels.

Sara will be in contact with NHS Champions to update them on county activity so that NHS organisations can get involved.

If you are keen to get things rolling in your organisation please contact Sara.

BBC Presenter Jake Humphrey starts NNUH 5K run

On Saturday 18th June 2011, the Norfolk & Norwich University Hospital held its second annual 5km Fun Run for NHS staff and their families. The event was organised by Workplace Health & Wellbeing at the Trust and Active Norfolk; who have been working together recently to bring physical activities into our workplace. The goal of the run was to motivate staff to become more physically active with an exciting event, as well as an opportunity to raise sponsorship for the ‘Norwich Cots for Tots’ appeal.

Why increase physical activity levels?

“Exercise is linked to satisfaction with life and reduces the risk of physical ill-health, and our analysis suggests that those who consider themselves to be healthy are less likely to be off sick or to be at work when they are unfit' Dr Steve Boorman

Increasing physical activity levels of NHS staff will help to improve quality, innovation, productivity and prevention (QIPP) across the NHS workforce and therefore lead to efficiency and cost savings.
